Peru’s Sacred Valley – The Belly Button of the World
After visiting the jewel in Peru’s crown, Machu Picchu, I expected our day tour of the Sacred Valley to be a bit of a let down in comparison…I couldn’t have been more wrong!

Much like the run up to the Sloth Sanctuary visit in Costa Rica, anticipation built as the day of the Machu Picchu trip approached. I found it hard to sleep the night before our visit.
We left Puno much as we came in: crammed into a 15 passenger van loaded up with locals. 1 hour later, we braved the streets of Juliaca and made it to our designated Peru Hop pick-up point, which was a small restaurant on the main ring-road.
Having gotten ourselves to the world’s highest navigable lake, we decided that we ought to explore some of it. Becci and I wandered down to the marina with our new pal, Doncaster Dave, to explore our lake-faring options.
Having survived our trip to 12,000ft above sea level, we had a full day in Arequipa to relax and do a bit of shopping.

There is 712km between Huacachina and Arequipa, and we managed the journey in 16 hours with a couple of stops along the way.
Greetings from the desert oasis of Huacachina, Peru.
Even though we had only seen 13% of Lima, it was time to move on. We’d marked out a basic itinerary back in Nashville, which as it turns out, follows something called The Gringo Trail.
Man, it feels like forever since we’ve talked. How ya been?
T minus 3 days until we leave for Costa Rica and Peru. It’s time to pack!
